Two lonely residents at a senior citizens home strike up an acquaintance. Neither seems to have any other friends, and they start to enjoy each other’s company. He offers to teach her gin rummy, and they begin playing a series of games. During the games there is increasing frustration for him and a new confidence for her, as she unexpectedly wins game after game. While playing, they converse about families and their past and present lives. Gradually, each conversation becomes a battle, like the ongoing gin games, until the increasing tension causes the revelation of hidden personal truths about each of them. A lively streak of humour runs through the story until the increasing tension and ugly truths are uncovered.
